Abstract

Nazi Germany’s support of the Spanish fascist film industry during the Civil War is still a relatively dark chapter in Iberian film history. The historical research made in Spain suggests the assumption that the Nazis were interested in helping Franco’s followers to make movies in Berlin in order to win some influence in the country and open a new market for Ufa’s films. This view is somehow questioned by the finding of official documents in the German Federal Archive (Bundesarchiv) which confirm that the Propaganda Ministry tried not only to gain power in the Spanish film landscape with these movies, but also to justify before of the German public the Third Reich’s policy of backing the illegal uprising of Franco’s troops.
